Like the
cell phase, the creature phase will mainly revolve around the "eat or be eaten" concept, as players navigate away from their home and encounter increasingly difficult challenges to over come. Unlike the cell phase, the creature phase is in 3D and it will be inhabited by other players' creatures in order to maintain a balanced ecosystem.
Socialization also plays a large role in this phase as players direct their creatures to cooperate with each other and eventually mate. After finding a mate and producing an egg, players will need to protect their eggs from predators and thievery. Eventually, the egg will hatch into offspring and players will have the opportunity to edit their creature further, spending more "DNA points" to add or remove characteristics to or from their creatures. When the egg hatches, players will need to nurture and raise the baby creature, helping it to make friends and to learn.

In this phase, creatures will have different characteristic ratings determining their speed, stealth, defense, social abilities, cuteness, and attack effectiveness. Plus, creatures will be able to learn new actions as they interact with other creatures. According to Will Wright, the gameplay in this phase is most comparable to the game Diablo, and the point will be to make your creature as social and intelligent as possible using DNA points so that players can advance to the
tribal phase.
