Domesticate another creature as soon as possible. The domesticated creature will trot along into the corral behind your main hut and begin producing eggs, which will appear in the square wooden basket on the side of the corral. Then you can assign a food gatherer to gather these eggs. This produces food faster, since the gatherer doesn't have to travel so far to get it.

I have also successfully domesticated 2 different creatures (different species) who coexisted quite peacefully in the corral together and produced so many eggs, I had to assign two gatherers to keep up with it.

I also noticed that when my village was under attack, one of my domesticated creatures came out of the corral and defended my village against the marauders!
