Judging Criteria

Currently, the moderators are responsible for choosing the Creature of the Week from randomly browsing through Sporepedia. These creatures are mostly chosen based on their originality and how funny they are, but mostly we just choose whatever creature we like the most.

Spore Error Messages

Below are some error and warning messages you may see from the game, along with suggestions for fixing them.

1000: Another instance of Spore is already running. Please quit or kill it first.

1001: The game cannot find any valid display modes. Please ensure your display is set to 32 bits.

1002: Direct X is not installed. Please install it, or reinstall the game.

1004: The game cannot find its data directory. Please reinstall the game.

1010 It is recommended that you update your graphics card drivers to avoid compatibility issues. Generally you can do this by going to the website of the hardware manufacturer for your card. The sites for NVIDIA, ATI, and Intel are:

1011: It is required that you upgrade your graphics card drivers to avoid serious issues with the game. Please see above.

1012: The game has issues with this card in multi GPU mode. Please either update your drivers, or disable multi GPU mode from the vendor's control panel.

2001: The system is below our min spec, and we cannot run at all.

2002: The system is below our min spec, and you may experience graphical, performance, or audio issues.

2003: You are running a version of Vista that has issues with graphics cards with large amounts of VRAM. Please either update to SP1, or install the corresponding fix from

Spore Patch

Spore will be releasing a DRM patch for those who were unhappy with Spores DRM. The timing of when the patch will be released is unknown, but if you join the site (it is free), we will send you the patch information as soon as it is available.

Spore 1.01 Patch

The Spore 1.01 Patch has been released. Use EA download manager, or get it here: http://files.ea.com/downloads/eacore/eadm-installer.exe

What's in the patch? It mainly fixessome bugs, including tuning and stability. Plus it comes with a couple new Spore Cheats. Some users have complained that it slows down the render, so you may want to hold a bit on it. Here are the details of what is in the patch, according to Spore:

Creature phase: Improved the way posse members behave during threatening situations and fights.
Space phase: Made finding your home world and colonies easier in the Galactic view.
Tribe phase: Made it so that tribe members can travel on steep hills if they need to do so now, but their speed will be reduced a lot.
Fixed an issue with attacks not working on some bigger animals and larger animals not dying correctly
Fixed collect mission not completing correctly when all parts have been collected
Fixed problems with the "Rolling Thunder" and "Déjà Vu" achievements not being awarded as they should
Fixed floating parts not being deducted from the budget when loaded into creator
Fixed an issue with the rotation rings not resizing correctly when a part was resized and improved their look
Fixed an issue where the terraforming score of planet could differ when revisiting a solar system
Fixed the keyboard controls for zoom & pitch in the Colony Planner not working properly
Fixed a crash that could occur when watching an epic creature attack a city
Fixed some issues where the game would freeze when using the Creature Tweaker tool or when capturing a planet in solar view
Fixed an issue where not all tribe members would obey the raid order when a large group was ordered to raid
Fixed an issue where banning a creation from one of your other saved games would black out the main menu

Maxis

Maxis is best known as the game development company for the highly-popular and critically acclaimed Sim titles such as SimCity and the best-selling computer game of all time, The Sims. The company was founded by game-thought leader Will Wright in 1987.

Maxis was acquired by Electronic Arts in 1997, but retained the majority of its identity and workforce. Up until recently, the Maxis logo was featured prominently on many of the Sim-based computer games and even makes a brief appearance in Spore's game opening.

The latest brainchild of Maxis and creator Will Wright is the game Spore, which has often been described as Sim Everything due to its Sim-inspired origins. Upcoming titles include the hotly-anticipated sequel to the original franchise, The Sims 3, which is expected to be available in early 2009.

Will Wright's studio is located in Emeryville, California and is getting full-credit for creating Spore (some of the later Sim City expansions didn't have the Maxis logo on them).

How long does installation take?
Depends on your computer but it takes about 30 minutes.

Should I download Spore or buy a boxed copy?
Downloading works, but if you buy a boxed copy, you will always have a backup CD of the game in case anything happens. Spore is selling a Galactic version as well for $20 more, but there doesn't appear to be much reason to buy it other than the 100 page guide (which you can buy for about $17 anyways - thought it doesn't look to be that helpful since Spore is a game of evolution based off your game play).

Will Spore delete my Spore Creature Creator?
Yes, but it will prompt you first. It lets you know that it is now part of the game and asks you if you'd like to uninstall it. To keep your previous creations, look for the question about User Generated Content and tell it to keep it. This way you'll save your previously created creatures, plus be able to use them in the game if you like.

Looking to make really cool Spore Creatures using the creature creator? Then you might find these Spore Creature Creator hacks useful.

Get larger PNGs off Sporepedia Hack

When Sporepedia was first launched, you were able to pull large PNGs from each creature profile. Now, when you right-click and "Save As..." the PNG that you get is tiny. Follow these steps to get a larger PNG for your viewing pleasure.

*This doesn't work on IE7, but it definitely works on the latest version of Firefox.

Here's what you do:

On Sporepedia, open the creature you want a PNG of.
Drag to select the image of the creature.
Right-click the selection and click "View Selection Source." A new window will open that displays the code of your selection.
Copy the image code that ends in "_lrg.png"; this is the large image that is displayed on Sporepedia.
Paste the image code into a new tab or window to view the larger PNG.
To save the PNG, right-click the image and click "Save As..."

Spin Parts That You Normally Can't

If you're not getting the circle on certain parts for spinning around purposes (like mouths, for example), try using the tab button to see if it will give you that ability.

Using Other People's Creatures Hack

If you have your own Spore hacks to share, join the site, then click Easy Edit to add your hacks!

If you go to Sporepedia, you can browse and search other peoples creatures. The best part is you can actually edit & use their creatures to make your own version - sometimes this is easier than starting from scratch.

Here's what you do: Open your browser, then open Spore. Choose create new creature. Toggle back to your browser to visit Sporepedia online. Find the creature you like. Click on it to get to it's details page. Then left click & drag the displayed creature image and without letting go, drag it down and hold it over the Spore Creature creator in your windows task bar (buttons at the bottom of your computer display). Don't let go until your are fully in the new creature creator area. Wait a few seconds and in will the stolen creature come.
