Creature Phase Problem

So this is my first time playing Spore and I got to creature phase. My problem comes from the fact that I can't walk on any large bodies of land (i.e. a continent) without some weird creature leaping up through the sand and eating me. That happens the moment MY particular creature steps foot on the beach, although my fellow species are running around much higher on land.

Everytime this happens, the game says "Dangerous creatures lurk in the deep. Don't stray too far from the shore!" even though I'm...on the shore...and following my fellow species through it. Only my particular creature gets eaten.

I'm carniverous if that somehow makes a difference. But I can't see how to progress any further when I need to interact with species that I can't even make it to, and the only thing I'm really able to do is wait around hoping that my enemies attack me. Those attacks seem few and far between. Did I do something wrong, is the game screwing up, or something else?
Do you find this valuable?

Also should note this fact - I am playing this on my friend's computer, but I believe the copy they have is registered. They've got other save files in which they've gotten to civilization stages. They haven't made it to space yet, but the point is that they made it past the other phases, so I don't think this is some weird auto-blocking mechanism. I dunno what's going on :( 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

i think the game is screwed up. i have 4 solutions:

1) don't walk on sand or go anywhere near it (when it eats you, you reborn in your home nest so just go on land, not sand

2)if you can't help it (or it eats you whatever you do)... go in 'the deep' (the real one) and wait for the creature to eat you, that should make you not be eaten when you are on the shore

3)if it dosn't work you can start the game again

4) or just start again from tribal stage and skip creature stage

Once, I came out of Cell stage and I was in the water! and when I walked on the land, A SEA MONSTER ATE ME!! ON LAND!!! I just deleted the planet and did it on an other planet, solved! But, if you like that creature, I'm sorry but you can still see it in the Sporepedia... 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
